Sleepy Hollow

by Christopher Kelly

Thriller; starring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci; directed by Tim Burton (Paramount Home Video)

In Burton's riff on the Washington Irving classic, a constable (Depp) investigates a series of beheadings in upstate New York circa 1799. The film was Oscar-nominated for its costume design, art direction, and cinematography, but with the power of the film's imagery lessened on video, what emerges is a fairy tale that veers awkwardly between camp and horror. Still, the fine cast (including Depp, Ricci, Michael Gambon, and Christopher Walken) makes this worth renting.
